2015 Hyundai Sonata Eco nets 38 mpg from 1 6L turbo 7 speed DCT
The wholly renewed 2015 Hyundai Sonata is on the verge of launching here in the United States, but it appears theres a bit more to the story first told at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. Hyundai has just revealed the first images and details of the Sonata Eco, a new entry in its midsize sedan lineup that combines a small, turbocharged engine and dual-clutch transmission to achieve an estimated 28 miles per gallon in the city and 38 mpg highway.
That new powertrain is Hyundais 1.6-liter turbocharged inline-four, rated at 177 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. That power is sent through a new, seven-speed dual-clutch box â" the first gearbox of its type in the segment. Hyundai points out that the Sonata Ecos 32 mpg combined rating offers a 10 percent improveme nt over the 2015 Sonata SE with its 2.4-liter naturally aspirated inline-four.
38 mpg highway is pretty impressive, especially considering rivals like Toyotas electrified Camry Hybrid musters up only one better, with 39 mpg on the highway (though its 43 mpg city fuel economy is, obviously, much better). And while Hyundai still has not detailed news about a next-generation Sonata Hybrid, weve heard the company is still committed to offering one.
The 2015 Sonata Eco starts at $23,275, not including $810 for destination. This represents a $2,125 price increase over the base Sonata, and the only option available on the Eco is the $4,100 Technology Package which includes a whole host of amenities, including heated leather seats, blind spot monitoring, proximity key and a navigation system with eight-inch screen among many other niceties. Scroll down to read the full details in Hyundais official release.
New 7-Speed Dual-Clutch Transmission Paired With 1.6-liter Turbo Four Maximizes Efficiency, Fun
FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., June 19, 2014 â" Hyundai today announced the third powertrain available in the 2015 Sonata. The 2015 Sonata Eco is expected to deliver 32 mpg combined fuel economy, will start at $23,275, excluding $810 freight charge, and go into production at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama plant later this summer.
"Sonata Eco enhances the sophisticated design and confidence-inspiring driving dynamics of the 2015 Sonata with even more impressive fuel economy," said John Shon, manager, product planning. "This innovative powertrain improves fuel efficiency without sacrificing the driving experience."
The 2015 Sonata Eco is powered by a 1.6-liter turbocharged Gamma four-cylinder engine producing an estimated 177 horsep ower and 195 lb. ft. of torque. Sonata Eco is the first Hyundai product to utilize a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which no other mid-size sedan offers. This innovative powertrain helps Sonata Eco deliver an estimated 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. The estimated 32 mpg combined rating is more than a 10 percent improvement over a 2015 Sonata SE powered by the 2.4-liter Theta II engine.
2015 Sonata Eco comes standard with all the features of Sonata SE plus a chrome grille, side mirror-mounted turn signal indicators, automatic headlights, a 10-way power driver seat with lumbar support, stitching on the instrument cluster hood, chrome interior door handles, 5-inch color touchscreen audio, a rearview backup camera and Blue Link® telematics system.

Jaguar Land Rover offers some detail about new Ingenium engine
Jaguar Land Rover officially announced its Ingenium family of engines with the unveiling of the 2.0-liter version in the Jaguar XE concept at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, but it kept details very thin at the time. All we knew was that the new turbocharged mills could be configured to use gasoline or diesel, and be positioned longitudinally or transversely. Months later, JLR is finally letting some more info slip about its new baby, but there are still some big questions to be answered.
For the Ingenium project, Jaguar Land Rover gave its engineers a clean sheet of paper and told them not to worry about using any previous parts or machinery. In the end, the designers came up with a family of turbocharged, aluminum-block engines based around modular, 500cc cylinders to allow it to grow or shrink as the market demanded. The layout was also made adaptable enough to incorporate hybrid drivetrains, if needed. "Being configurable and flexible are the two key strands of Ingeniums DNA because we have future-proofed our new engines from the outset," said said Ron Lee, the companys director of Powertrain Engineering.
To maximize efficiency, Jaguar promises that all versions of the Ingenium engines come with computer-controlled, variable oil pumps and water pumps to use only as much energy as needed. They also get direct injection, roller bearings for the cams and stop/start. The diesel version alone has 17 percent less internal friction than the mill it replaces, the company claims. JLR is also promising class-leading figures for Ingeniums torque and horsepower too, but its not giving away those specs just yet.
While it all sounds intriguing, we still have to wait a while before actually driving a product that makes use of the Ingenium. The production of the 2.0-liter diesel (codenamed AJ200D) doesnt begin until early 2015. Scroll down to read the full press release about JLRs new pride and joy.
Ingenium is an all-new family of compact, lightweight, low-emissions diesel and petrol turbocharged engines that deliver both the efficiency and performance that our global customers desire
Configurable and flexible common diesel and petrol architecture enables maximum manufacturing efficiency, more variants, higher quality and greater speed to market
Designed and engineered in-house by Jaguar Land Rover engineers, volume production begins in early 2015 at the all-new Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing Centre near Wolverhampton, UK
Weighing up to 80kg less than todays engines, Ingenium uses patented technologies to reduce friction and deliver class-leading CO2 emissions, refinement and high performance
Whitley, UK: Ingenium, the new family of premium diesel and petrol engines designed, engineered and manufactured by Jaguar Land Rover, delivers class-leading levels of torque, horsepower and refinement while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
The company today revealed more of the technical details of these new lightweight, compact low-emissions modular engines as it showcased some of the companys future technologies.
Ingenium: Configurable, Flexible, Modular
Jaguar Land Rover has developed its own new family of advanced technology, low-friction, high-performance petrol and diesel engines to meet growing customer demand for lower fuel consumption and cost of ownership, without compromising performance and the driver experience.
Ingeniums design brief presented Jaguar Land Rovers engineers with a tough and complex challenge. Its new engine family would need to be:
Configurable and flexible to enable seamless installation in a range of new Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles
Scalable up and down to create smaller or larger displacement variants in the future
Able to accommodate a range of powertrain layouts including rear-, all- and four-wheel drive
Engineered to support manual and automatic transmissions as well as electrified hybrid drive systems
Easily accepting of new advances in engine technologies as they become available
Jaguar Land Rover powertrain engineers at the companys Whitley and Gaydon development facilities have based Ingeniums foundation on extremely strong and compact aluminium blocks for both diesel and petrol versions.
These lightweight blocks share the same bore, stroke, cylinder spacing and 500cc cylinder capacity. This helps give Ingenium the configurability and flexibility around which smaller or larger engines can quickly and efficiently be developed to meet future regulatory and competitive requirements. To support the development of this future powertrain technology, including the new Ingenium family, Jaguar Land Rover has invested £40 million to expand and enhance its Powertrain Engineering facility at its Whitley Technical Centre.
All diesel and petrol Ingenium variants will be equipped with state-of-the-art turbochargers that improve performance, particularly at low speeds, and that help reduce consumption and CO2 emissions.
Ingeniums modular design enables both petrol and diesel engines to share many common internal components and calibration strategies. This reduces complexity, raises quality and simplifies manufacturing, and allows Jaguar Land Rover to react more quickly to changes in global demand.
"Customers around the world are increasingly demanding cleaner-running, more efficient vehicles that maintain or even enhance the performance attributes expected of a rugged all-terrain vehicle or a high performance car. Our Ingenium engines deliver this to a new level," said Dr. Wolfgang Ziebart, Jaguar Land Rover Group Engineering Director.
"Engineering and manufacturing our own engines improves our ability to react to changes in demand and improves our ability to react to changes in legislation and competitive technologies in the future," added Dr Ziebart. "We believe that with the range of technologies we are investing in, Jaguar Land Rover can absolutely satisfy the often conflicting requirements of delivering engaging high-performance luxury vehicles that reduce our carbon footprint in the long-term."
Technology Powerhouse
Ingenium bristles with innovations that will deliver more of what Jaguar Land Rovers global customers expect from premium high-performance engines: outstanding low-end torque, effortless acceleration and class-leading emissions performance with low consumption.
One strategy Jaguar Land Rover powertrain engineers used to accomplish this was a focus on reducing internal friction
In the first Ingenium engine to go into volume production, a 2.0-litre diesel known as AJ200D, friction is reduced by 17 per cent compared to the current engine, helping to make it one of the most efficient and responsive 2.0-litre turbo diesels in its segment.
Ingenium engines feature six key technologies that combine to reduce friction, add refinement and improve performance. They include:
Roller bearings on cam and balancer shafts, instead of machined-in bearing surfaces.
Computer-controlled variable oil pumps that save energy by delivering the optimum amount of oil at all speeds, engine loads and temperatures.
Computer-controlled variable water pumps that adjust the amount of coolant flowing through the engine, based on temperature, speed and driving conditions. The split or twin circuit cooling system offers the twin benefits of lowering CO2 emissions by enabling fast warm ups, and providing quick cabin heat on cold days.
Simplified cam drive system designed for modular application.
Crankshafts that are offset from the centre of the block.
Electronically controlled piston cooling jets to improve efficiency in the oil pumping circuit. Jets are switched off when piston cooling is not needed. They also enable the engine to reach its optimum operating temperature faster, further helping to reduce CO2 emissions.
All Ingenium engines will be equipped with advanced and efficient turbochargers, central direct high-pressure fuel injection, variable valve timing and start-stop technology.
Ingenium will also come to market as one of the most tested and proven Jaguar Land Rover engines ever. Before the first Ingenium engine is sold, it will have already undergone the equivalent of more than eight years of the toughest, most punishing testing that Jaguar Land Rover engineers could devise. These tests include a huge range of integrity and durability testing, including more than 72,000 hours of dyno testing and 2 million miles of real-world testing to ensure these engines deliver - and continue to deliver.
Key Role in Vehicle Weight Reduction
Jaguar Land Rover already leads the industry in the production of lightweight, aluminium-bodied vehicles. The introduction of Ingenium unites the companys light-weight chassis expertise with powertrains specifically designed and calibrated to complement reduced weight vehicles.
Jaguar Land Rover engineers are focusing on reducing vehicle weight by optimising every component in every system, powertrains included. Despite adding features and increasing power output, Ingenium engines weigh as much as 80kg less than todays equivalent engines.
"Ingenium fulfils our commitment to offer our global customers some of the most advanced powertrains available in some of the lightest vehicles in the premium SUV and performance car segments," said Ron Lee, Jaguar Land Rover Director of Powertrain Engineering.
"Being configurable and flexible are the two key strands of Ingeniums DNA because we have future-proofed our new engines from the outset. Ingenium will be able to accept new advances in fuel, turbocharging, emissions, performance and electrification technologies when they are ready and accessible to be deployed.
"We were able to design Ingenium in this way because we had the rare opportunity to start the project with a clean sheet of paper. We werent locked into any of the usual restrictions that force engineering compromises because we had no existing production machinery that would dictate design parameters, no carryover engine architectures to utilise and no existing factory to modify," said Lee.

Man steals crashes catches on fire and breaks in half Tesla Model S
Multiple injuries were reported in a dangerous high-speed crash involving a Tesla Model S this holiday weekend in Los Angeles. The EV was apparently stolen from a local Tesla store and was driven at triple-digit speeds through LA a little before 1 am, a sergeant Campbell from the Los Angeles Police Departments Pacific Division told KTLA 5.
Following a call from employees at the store, police chased the apparent thief through LA until he crashed into two cars and a lamp post. The Model S split in half, with the back end getting wedged into a nearby synagogue while the front half caught on fire. An eyewitness told NBC Los Angeles that, "Everybody who was looking was screaming. They tried to help but there was too much smoke.""They tried to help but there was too much smoke." â" Eyewitness
What, exactly, caused the fire is unknown, but lets just rehash the old chestnut that Tesla EVs are not inherently fire traps and that driving at over 100 miles per hour is a dangerous endeavor in any vehicle. It was originally reported that the thief died, but he, along with people from the cars he hit, were taken to the hospital for treatment and he is reportedly still alive.
More to come, most assuredly, and for now you can watch three local TV news video reports below.

José Mourinho shares his fear in Jaguar F Type R Coupe spot
Jaguar is in the middle of an image makeover. It wants people to know that it makes more than just big, comfy luxury cars. Underneath that there is an edge. In its recent ads, the company wants to be associated with a more tailored, witty form of villainy. The next step is showing that its also fearless.
Many Americans might not be familiar with José Mourinho, but hes one of the premier soccer, or football, coaches in the world. Hes nicknamed "The Special One." Mourinho worked his way up from an assistant coach to lead small teams but eventually took over international heavyweights like Real Madrid and Chelsea.
In a new ad for the Jaguar F-Type R Coupe, Mourinho talks about what it means to be afraid. You might think such successful people overcome their fears, but successful men are driven it, he claims. But being scared doesnt make a man weak â" it makes him dangerous. Scroll down to understand what Mourinho is talking about and get an earful from the wonderful exhaust of the R Coupe.

Comparsion 2014 Maserati Quattroporte GTS vs 2014 Jaguar XJR
2. Jaguar XJR
The new XJR is the latest addition to the XJ lineup and is the fastest XJ Jaguar has ever built. 0-60 takes only 4.4 seconds to a top speed of 174mph. The engine is Jaguars wonderful 5.0 liter supercharged V8 that makes 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. The interior is more old-school than the Maseratis but I still think Jaguar has almost mastered the interior department. The base XJ costs $73,000. The XJR costs $116,000. So thats a $43,000 difference between the two. And is it worth it?The people who are buying this type of car arent going to care.
1. Maserati Quattroporte GTS
The Quattroprte is Maseratis largest car and has an equally powerful engine. It is a twin-turbo 3.8 liter V8 that produces 523 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. The interior looks so refined and well-designed. In the rear, you can option for individual seats that can recline, as well as be heated or cooled. The Quattroporte shares parts from the Chrysler family, for example the navigation, which is the same unit you will find in the Dodge Dart. Some people think it is wrong to have a $140,000 car have the same parts as a $16,000 car. I think the Chrysler parts work great and I dont know why those people think it is so bad.

Report 2015 Ford Mustang potentially leaked by Car and Driver
Few upcoming debuts have been as eagerly anticipated as the all-new Ford Mustang thats expected to debut shortly as the Mustangs 50th anniversary year approaches. Well, Car and Driver magazine would have us wait no longer as it claims to be leaking Fords new global pony car early.
Of course what youre looking at is just as likely to be a composite rendering based on what C/D projects the new Mustang to look like, but to our eyes it looks spot on. Combining design traits from the Evos Concept with classic Mustang signatures and Fords Aston-inspired grille treatment, C/Ds images â" including a complete 360-degree digital navigator â" show a Mustang not only for the modern era, but also for global distribution, taking a quintessentially American car to markets its predecessors were never designed for.
Those global considerations are expected to spell the demise of the outgoing Mustangs holdout live rear axle in favor of an independent suspension, and a slight constricting of the exterior dimensions. And thanks to a separate leak, coming from a digital survey, we have apparent confirmation of what will power the new pony car. While the existing 3.7-liter V6 and 5.0-liter V8 engines will apparently carry over with only slight adjustments in output, the survey confirms a new 2.4-liter turbo four will be positioned in between them, offering slightly more power than the V6 but markedly improved fuel economy for a manageable $560 premium over base.
Car and Driver reports that Ford could replace the base V6 with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost from the Taurus SHO, slot the current supercharged 5.8 into the new GT500 and an all-new twin-turbo V8 into a new GT350. The successor to the Boss 302, however, could go with the new engine or stick with the previous one. Well have to wait a little longer, but hopefully not much, to see how this all plays out. In the meantime you can head over to C/D to delve into their project details and play around with the virtual navigator.

Mini goes zany with latest accessories catalog
Driving a Mini is most definitely an individualistic choice â" one that not everyone would get on board with. So if youre going to go with such a fashion statement, you might as well give it your own sense of style. Thats where Minis new line of accessories come in.
Available for the new third-gen Mini hardtop, the accessories offer buyers the opportunity to customize their retro hatchback as best they see fit. There are roof graphics, accessory lighting, wheel upgrades and mirror caps (like the cartoonish ones pictured at right) just like you would have found in the parts catalog for previous iterations of the Mini, but now the brand is offering four appearance kits its calling Mini Design Lines.
The kits are color coordinated in either Vivid Green, Speedwell Blue, John Cooper Works Pro (in black, red and grey) and Essential Black and include everything from the interior trim to exterior graphics. They might not be to everyones taste, but that kinda strikes us as the point. Scope em out in the extensive high-res image gallery above and the details in the press release below.
